First off, rush out and buy HMS Pinafore on Polygram 632 5143.
Gilbert & Sullivan's work has never been so much fun.
With the recent film Topsy Turvy (starring another fine comedian/actor Jim Broadbent), and recent London revival at G&S's spiritual home, The Savoy Theatre, G&S are in vogue once more.
The D'Oyly Carte Opera version of Pinafore in March 2000 starred Sam Kelly ( Allo allo fame) in the role of Sir Joseph Porter. If you are mad on G&S you can visit the home of the D'Oyly Cartes in Devon - see my other site www.bayards.co.uk for pictures and details

The Plot
Because of his lowly rank, humble sailor Ralph Rackstraw can not marry Cpt Corcoran's daughter Josephine.
Since Josephine cannot bear her other suitor Sir Joseph Porter, the unlikely First Lord of the Admiralty (Frankie Howerd), she and Ralph elope, but are betrayed by the jealous seaman Dick Deadeye.
Sir Jospeh, however, loses interest in Josephine when he discovers that, due to a mixup as babies, her father is common and Ralph is of noble birth....and the lovers are free to marry at last.
