Tampa Bay, Florida is a great place to visit and live. It is very close to many famous places such as Busch Gardens, Disney World, and Universal Studios. Tampa Bay also has many destinations for people who love the ocean. From Tampa Bay you can take various ocean excursions for sport fishing, shell collecting, or simply soaking up the sun. Tampa Bay is also a city that hosts three major professional sports teams. The teams are from the National Hockey League, the Major League of Baseball, and the National Football League. The teams are named the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Tampa Bay Rays. There are also many other minor league sports teams that represent the city of Tampa Bay.
The NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers were an expansion team that began in 1976. Their beginning was a disaster as they set a league record for losing 26 games in a row. They had a brief period of success in the 1970’s but soon after returned to their losing ways. Eventually in 1996, with the help of coach Tony Dungy, they started to turn things around. The team was successful and won a Super Bowl in 2003 under the guidance of coach Jon Gruden. Tampa Bay has hosted Super Bowls on four different occasions.
The Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team first began in 1992. They play all of their games in a downtown arena called the Amalie arena. The team one a Stanley Cup in 2004 and they made it all the way to the Eastern Conference final in 2011. They were Eastern Conference champions during the year of 2015 and in 2016 they returned to the Eastern Conference final.
For many years Tampa Bay has been a prime location for spring training of both professional and minor league baseball teams. The Tampa Bay Rays was originally called the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The baseball team started playing at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg in 1998. For 10 years they had losing seasons but they finally won the American League pennant in 2008 and then made it all the way to the World Series. Unfortunately, this has been the only appearance for this team in the World Series.
The Tampa Bay Ray also won the American League East in the years of 2008 and 2010. Starting in the year 2007 the team decided to search for a baseball stadium that was closer to the center of Tampa Bay’s population. Finally in the year of 2016 the city Council in St. Petersburg gave approval for the team to vacate the stadium and search for a new location.
Tampa Bay sports history includes many other sports team including the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Tampa Bay Mutiny, Florida Bulls, and the University of Tampa Spartans. Therefore, if you love sporting events then a visit to Tampa Bay is a must.
